Medicare covers a lot — but not everything. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) leaves beneficiaries responsible for deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. In Florida, where the cost of healthcare services continues to rise, that exposure adds up quickly. Medicare Supplement Insurance — also called Medigap — is a type of private health insurance that helps pay some of those costs.

Plans Are Federally Standardized

Medicare Supplement Insurance policies are standardized by the federal government. Each plan type — labeled by letter, such as Plan G or Plan N — must provide the same core benefits regardless of which insurance company sells it. A Plan G purchased in Georgia covers the same benefits as a Plan G purchased in Florida. The insurer and the premium differ. The benefits do not.

This matters for anyone relocating to Florida.

Moving to Florida Does Not Cancel Your Coverage

A common misconception: that a Medicare Supplement Insurance Policy purchased in another state must be cancelled or replaced when moving to Florida. This is not accurate. Medicare Supplement coverage follows the beneficiary, not the state of residence. A policyholder who moves from Georgia to Florida keeps their existing policy. The insurance company is required to honor it.

What may change is the premium. Insurers can adjust rates based on the new state of residence. The coverage itself — the benefits — remains the same.

Before cancelling an existing policy after a move, a beneficiary should contact their insurance company directly to confirm portability and ask about any rate adjustments. Cancelling first and reapplying later can be costly if guaranteed issue rights no longer apply.

Guaranteed Issue Rights Protect You — But Only At Certain Times

Guaranteed issue rights give Medicare beneficiaries the right to purchase a Medicare Supplement Insurance Policy without medical underwriting. That means an insurer cannot deny coverage or charge higher premiums based on health history.

These rights apply in specific situations, including:

  • During the initial open enrollment period — the six-month window that begins when a beneficiary is both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B
  • When losing qualifying coverage, such as an employer group health plan or Medicare Advantage plan
  • When a Medicare Advantage plan leaves the service area or stops being offered

Outside of these windows, Florida insurers can use medical underwriting. A beneficiary who cancels a Medigap policy and later tries to re-enroll may face higher premiums or denial of coverage based on health conditions.

The Bottom Line

Florida’s healthcare costs make out-of-pocket exposure under Original Medicare a real consideration. Medicare Supplement Insurance can provide more predictable costs — but enrollment timing and policy decisions matter. Understanding when guaranteed issue rights apply, and knowing that existing policies travel with you when you move, can prevent costly mistakes.
