For Your Next Trip: Do You Need Global Medical Insurance?

Your domestic health plan may not follow you abroad — and that gap can be costly.
Most people assume their health insurance works everywhere. For many, it doesn’t — or it works in a limited way that leaves significant exposure. Global medical insurance is designed to address that gap. Whether you need it depends on where you’re going, how long you’ll be there, and what coverage you already have.
What Is It?
Global medical insurance is a limited benefit health plan that provides medical coverage generally when you are outside your home country. Plans vary widely, but coverage typically includes emergency medical care, hospitalization, and in some cases evacuation to a medical facility equipped to treat you.
These plans are not ACA-compliant major medical coverage. They are not required to cover essential health benefits as defined by the Affordable Care Act, and they do not qualify for premium tax credits. They are temporary, travel-oriented plans — not a substitute for comprehensive domestic health insurance.
Who Is It For?
Global medical insurance may be worth considering for:
- Travelers spending extended time outside the United States
- Retirees living abroad part of the year
- People on work assignments in other countries
- Anyone whose domestic plan explicitly excludes or limits international coverage
It is less likely to be the right fit for a short domestic trip or for someone whose existing plan already provides meaningful international benefits. Checking your current plan’s travel provisions before purchasing a separate policy is a reasonable first step.
How Much Does It Cost?
Premiums vary based on age, destination, duration, and the coverage limits selected. Plans with higher benefit maximums and lower deductibles cost more. Plans with broader geographic coverage — including the United States — tend to carry higher premiums than those limited to international use only.
As with any limited benefit plan, the premium does not tell the full story. Deductibles, benefit caps, and exclusions all affect what the plan actually pays if you need care abroad.
Things to Consider
Pre-existing conditions are typically excluded. If you have an ongoing health condition, a claim related to it may be denied. This is a standard limitation of global medical plans and should be clearly understood before purchasing.
Coverage limits matter. Emergency evacuation — transporting a patient to a hospital equipped to handle a serious condition — can cost tens of thousands of dollars in remote locations. Confirming that a plan includes evacuation coverage, and at what limit, is worth doing before departure.
Network access varies by destination. Some plans have provider networks in certain countries; in others, you may pay out of pocket and seek reimbursement. Understanding how claims work in your destination country reduces surprises.
Duration is fixed. Coverage ends when the policy term ends. If your trip is extended, coverage may need to be extended or renewed — and that isn’t always automatic.
Worth Asking Before You Go
Global medical insurance isn’t necessary for every trip, but the cost of a serious medical event abroad — without coverage — can be substantial. Reviewing what your existing plan covers internationally, then filling any meaningful gap with a travel medical plan, is a reasonable approach for most international travelers.
