Medicare Health Plans

Original Medicare covers hospital and medical care, but leaves gaps in cost-sharing that most people choose to address with additional coverage. Three options are most common:

Medigap

Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance) may help cover what Original Medicare doesn’t — deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. Premiums vary by plan type, age, gender, tobacco status, and location. The best time to enroll is your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts when you turn 65 and enroll in Part B — outside that window, medical underwriting may apply.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Part C is an alternative to Original Medicare through a private insurer, typically bundling Part A, Part B, and often Part D — sometimes with added dental, vision, or hearing benefits. Premiums and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan, though your Part B premium still applies. Networks matter: your doctors and hospitals must participate in the plan for coverage to apply.

Part D

Part D adds prescription coverage to Original Medicare through a private insurer. Even if you take no medications now, enrolling when first eligible helps you avoid a late enrollment penalty that applies indefinitely. Costs depend on your plan’s formulary and your specific prescriptions. An independent agent can help you compare all three and find the right fit — at no cost to you.

ACA Marketplace Insurance

ACA Marketplace Insurance covers essential health benefits — preventive care, prescriptions, emergency services, and hospitalization — and are open to U.S. citizens and lawfully present immigrants without access to Medicare, Medicaid, or affordable employer coverage, regardless of health history. Plans are organized into four metal tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) based on how costs are split between you and your insurer.

When Can You Enroll?

The annual Open Enrollment Period is the primary window to enroll or switch plans. A qualifying life event — losing coverage, getting married, having a child, or moving — opens a Special Enrollment Period year-round.

How Much Do ACA Plans Cost?

ACA Marketplace premiums vary based on your age, location, tobacco status, and the metal tier you choose. Many enrollees qualify for premium tax credits based on household income, which can significantly reduce the monthly cost. What you actually pay depends on your specific situation — I can help you find out what’s available before you commit to anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Medicare is a federal program for people 65 and older, and for some younger individuals with qualifying disabilities. The ACA Marketplace is for people under 65 who don’t have access to Medicare, Medicaid, or affordable employer coverage. The two programs serve different populations — if you’re eligible for Medicare, the Marketplace isn’t your path.

Generally no. Once you’re enrolled in Medicare, you’re no longer eligible for premium tax credits on a Marketplace plan. Your coverage decisions at that point happen within Medicare, not the Marketplace.

It depends on the program. For Medicare, missing your Initial Enrollment Period can result in late enrollment penalties that follow you permanently. For the Marketplace, missing Open Enrollment means waiting until the next annual window unless you experience a qualifying life event. Enrollment timing matters — this is one of the most common and costly mistakes to avoid.

Yes, but eligibility for a premium tax credit depends on whether your employer plan is considered “affordable” under ACA rules. If your employer’s coverage meets that threshold, you can still enroll in a Marketplace plan — you just won’t qualify for a subsidy to help pay for it.

You don’t have to use one, but working with me costs you nothing. I can compare available options, walk you through enrollment, and explain how different plans interact — without being tied to a single carrier.
